Lubricating oils may not perform well under conditions of high speed, high temperature, and high pressure, but graphite wear-resistant materials can function efficiently under such conditions at temperatures between 200–2000 °C without the need for lubricating oil. Many devices that transport corrosive media utilize graphite components such as piston cups, sealing rings, and bearings, which operate without lubrication. In the Nuclear and Defense Industries:
Graphite is an excellent neutron moderator and is used in nuclear reactors, especially uranium-graphite reactors. Graphite used in nuclear applications must have high purity, with total impurity content below several dozen PPM and boron content less than 0.5 PPM. In the defense industry, graphite is used to manufacture nozzles for solid-fuel rockets, missile nose cones, parts for space exploration equipment, heat-insulating materials, and radiation shielding components. -
To Prevent Boiler Scale Formation and Corrosion:
Experiments have shown that adding a small amount of graphite powder (about 4–5 grams per ton of water) to boiler water can prevent scale buildup on boiler surfaces. Additionally, graphite coatings applied to metal chimneys, rooftops, bridges, and pipelines provide anti-corrosion and anti-rust protection. -
